Çini is the name given to ceramic products with a glazed and patterned surface. Motifs are applied onto a body prepared from raw materials such as clay, quartz and kaolin, which is then glazed and fired at high temperature. This is why the colours remain unfaded for centuries.
The Difference Between Çini and Ceramic
Ceramic is the general name for clay-based products hardened by firing. Çini, on the other hand, is an artistic type of ceramic that is hand-decorated and glazed. Every çini is a ceramic, but not every ceramic is çini.
Why Mosque Tiles?
- Permanence: The glazed surface preserves colours and patterns for generations.
- Hygiene: It does not hold dirt and is easy to clean.
- Acoustics and light: The glossy surface reflects light, making the space look bright and spacious.
- Spiritual atmosphere: Tulip, rumi and hatayi motifs and the art of calligraphy create a serene interior.
Classical Turkish Çini Motifs
Floral (naturalistic) motifs such as tulip, carnation, hyacinth, rose, pomegranate and cypress; stylised motifs such as rumi and hatayi; cloud bands, the çintemani and geometric interlacing are the best-known elements of Turkish çini art.
